How To Prevent Lyme Disease

Lyme disease has become more common in many parts of the country. As the disease has spread to more locations, it has become important to understand little things that you can do in order to prevent contracting lyme disease. Here are a few tips to help you avoid lyme disease and still enjoy the great outdoors.

Often lyme disease begins with exposure to an infected deer tick. One of the easiest ways to minimize the chance of coming in contact with one of these ticks is to dress appropriately. If you plan on spending much time in a wooded area, you may want you wear a long-sleeved shirt with buttoned cuffs that are snug. Also make sure to wear long pants, and tuck your shirt into the pants. This will make it harder for a tick to find a nice warm spot on your skin to bite. Another tip is to wear light colored clothing. Deer ticks generally are darker in nature, so it is easier to spot one on a lighter background and dispose of the tick.

Your choice of shoes is also important for your walk in the woods. Wearing boots that are close fitting to the calves is a great idea if you want to avoid exposure to lyme disease. Since the legs of your pants will fit over the boots, it makes it very hard for a tick to come in contact with your skin.

Along with watching your mode of dress, spray a little insect repellent on your pants, socks, and shoes. This will help to make you less attractive to the ticks, and thus cut your chances of being infected with lyme disease.

While in the woods, try to stay on paths and in clearings as much as possible. Ticks carrying lyme disease often are found in underbrush and in sections that are otherwise overgrown. Staying in relatively open territory helps to lessen the chances that a bite will occur.
